ELGIN, IL — will host 16-year-old Polish pianist Filip Kauch, one of the most promising young musicians of his generation, for a special guest artist residency in April.

On Sunday, April 26 at 2:00 p.m., Kauch will perform Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor with the Civic Orchestra in Herrick Chapel on the university’s campus, located at 1151 N. State Street in Elgin. The performance highlights a unique cultural exchange and offers audiences an opportunity to experience Polish classical music performed by an emerging international artist.

Kauch, who was born in 2009 in Kościan, Poland, began studying piano at the age of eight. He is currently a student at the Jadwiga Kaliszewska Secondary School of Music in Poznań and has already received more than 40 awards in national and international piano competitions.

In addition to his orchestral performance, Kauch will present a solo recital on Tuesday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m. at Church of the Cross Presbyterian Church, 475 W. Higgins Road in Hoffman Estates. The recital program will include works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Paderewski, de Falla, and Debussy.

Tickets for the April 26 concert are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and free for students and children. Tickets will be available at the door (cash only). Admission to the April 28 recital is free, with a freewill offering accepted.

Austin Anderson has accepted the role of Interim Program Coordinator of ’s Communications Arts Department effective August 1. Anderson has taught Introduction to Sports Broadcasting/Sports Information, Questions of Life: Entering the Conversation, Foundations of Speech, and Wellness as an adjunct professional within ’s Demoss Center of Worship in the Performing Arts since 2021. In his new role, Anderson will teach public speaking, communication, media, and sports broadcasting while also advising students within the Communication Arts Program.

“We’re excited to have Austin join as a full-time faculty serving as the Interim Program Coordinator of our Communication Arts Department,” said Dr. Warren Anderson, Director of the Demoss Center for Worship in the Performing Arts. “Austin has a large professional network in the Chicago Sports marketplace since he has worked with three local sports franchises. We believe that his expertise within Chicago sports professional and minor leagues will be key to strengthening our Sports Broadcasting minor and launching a new Podcasting Network.”

Austin will work with ’s broadcasting team to create a new Podcast Studio during the 2023-24 academic year. The goal of the Podcast Network is to create new podcasts and train students to create their own podcasts.

Austin Anderson moves into this new role having served for two years as the Director of Sports Information and five years as the Director of Athletic Communications for ’s Athletic Department. During his tenure with ’s Athletic Department, Anderson managed , wrote departmental press releases, managed social media content, oversaw athletics history (records and awards), was responsible for game broadcast management, and was the event planner for the annual Hall of Fame and the JUISY ( Impressive Stars of the Year) award ceremonies.  While at , Anderson has received national recognition for his work and is a three-time top-10 finisher in the annual NAIA-SIDA publications/media contests.

Anderson earned his M.A. in Strategic Communication and Leadership from Spring Arbor University in May 2021. He earned his B.A. from Waynesburg University (2017) in southwestern Pennsylvania with a degree in Communications: Sports Broadcasting/Sports Information. During his time at Waynesburg, he was active in the campus television station, newspaper, and radio station. He also pursued various broadcasting opportunities outside of Waynesburg, including being an announcer for the Westmoreland Sports Network during his senior year. 

Anderson served as an official scorer and alternate play-by-play announcer for the Schaumburg Boomers independent baseball team from 2018-2019. During the summer of 2017, he was the Broadcast/Media Relations Assistant for the Gary SouthShore RailCats independent baseball team. He also has served as the Broadcast and Sales Intern for the Chicago Bandits professional softball team in Rosemont.

Plans Mid-Winter Choir Tour /judson-university-plans-mid-winter-choir-tour/ Mon, 23 Jan 2023 22:18:30 +0000 /?p=147866 The Choir is preparing for a multi-stop tour in Illinois, and one stop in Iowa from January 26 through January 29.

On the tour, the choir will sing at churches and some performance venues. This tour will feature a nearly 50-member choir, highlighting the strength of the Choir as a critical outreach of the University.

Do you know any prospective students who might be interested in a major offered through the Demoss Center for Worship in the Performing Arts: Christian Ministries, Communication Arts, English, Music Performance, Music Business and Entrepreneurship, and Worship Arts? Admissions and the DCWPA are planning a fun program starting with Chapel, a campus tour, lunch in the cafeteria with DCWPA faculty, viewing a scene from our fall play (It’s a Wonderful Life – A Live Radio Play), a Dark Room studio tour/recording session, a “Taste of Christian Ministries,” a fun interactive drum circle with percussion instructor Michael Folker, and observing the beginning of a choir rehearsal.  Parents are invited to attend the day with their prospective students. The program will run from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

“It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” is based on the classic holiday movie with a clever twist: the story is staged as a live 1940s radio broadcast! The story of George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve but discovers that life is worth living because of the love of family, friends, and God. This fun adaptation will feature the talents of students Spencer Armstrong, Karyssa Dale, John Francis, Rayna Mall, Rachel Rosborough, Tobias Salisbury, and Luke Staerkel all playing multiple parts and creating hilarious sound effects used in the old days of radio.

Midwest Opera Theater Presents Another Sunrise at /midwest-opera-theater-presents-another-sunrise-at-judson-university%ef%bf%bc/ Thu, 21 Apr 2022 01:56:05 +0000 /?p=19117 Midwest Opera Theater and the Demoss Center for Worship in the Performing Arts at are proud to present Another Sunrise by Jake Heggie on Saturday, April 23, at 7 p.m. in Thulin Auditorium in ’s Thompson Hall (1151 N. State Street, Elgin, IL 60123). This one-woman opera is based on the life of a Polish Jew who survived the Holocaust and imprisonment in Auschwitz. Internationally acclaimed soprano and Guest Artist in Voice at Dr. Maria Kanyova will perform this moving 30-minute opera. Accompanying her on piano will be Dr. Robert Kania, Chair of the Music Department at and Professor of Music in Piano.

Critics have hailed Maria Kanyova as an extraordinary singing actress. Robert Trussell of the Kansas City Star wrote of her portrayal of Pat Nixon, “Her voice could stop time.” Throughout Maria’s extensive and busy performing career, she has performed leading roles with the Chicago Lyric Opera, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Dallas Opera, and the New York City Opera, along with many other prestigious opera companies. As a voice teacher and celebrated soprano, Maria is currently an Associate Voice Professor at University of Missouri-Kansas City and a Guest Artist in Voice at . Recently she has bridged her passion for singing and teaching voice together in her creation of Midwest Opera Theater, a mobile opera company, www.midwestopera.com. Here she is committed to giving young singers and community members performance opportunities with seasoned operatic professionals and to present these collaborations in cities and venues where opera might not ordinarily be performed. August 2019 marked the first season for MWOT. This year marks the return of MWOT hosted by after a pause in producing opera during the pandemic months.

Dr. Robert Kania, a native of Poland, has performed as a piano recital soloist and accompanist on three continents: Europe and North and South America. His recent appearances include performances at the Wexford Opera Festival in Wexford, Ireland; the Academy of Music in Poznan, Poland; Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.; and Berea College in Berea, Ohio. He has studied with such distinguished masters as Sequeira Costa, Andrzej Tatarski, and Jack Wonerock. Through these masters, Dr. Kania’s teaching lineage goes back directly to Franz Liszt and Frederic Chopin. Dr. Kania has taught Piano, Music Theory, Aural Skills, and Orchestration at since 1998. He is also the Artistic Director of the Civic Orchestra.

Maria Kanyova and Robert Kania are married and have four children.

This performance of Another Sunrise is free of charge however there will be an opportunity to give a charitable donation to World Vision for Ukrainian Child Relief after the performance through a free-will offering.
